Why do a practicum at the ICRP?

If you are interested in international relations or world politics and want to gain experience in these fields by working for a non-governmental organisation, a one or three months practicum (work placement) at the Institute for Cultural Relations Policy could be the ideal start for you.

The objective of the programme is to offer students from diverse academic background relevant experience in their future-to-be field of employment. Participants will be given a real chance to utilise what they have learnt at university so far by organising and attending international conferences, making interviews with experts, politicians or diplomats, writing articles, blog entries or even research papers in the field of their interest. The programme welcomes students enrolled in universities in outside the European Union.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants should be students or entry-level professionals of journalism/social studies/law/economics/international relations/political science or related fields. High level knowledge of English is mandatory and good communications skills (both oral and written) required.

Applicants are enrolled in universities in the following countries are preferred: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, China, Egypt, Georgia, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Mali, Morocco, Palestine, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. However students from other countries are also eligible.

It is essential to have good motivation and be ready to work in an international environment in Budapest.

Interns’ responsibilities include

Research (independent studies regarding cultural relations policy to be published in journal)
Writing and editing of ICRP special edition publications of Human Rights Issues
Writing articles/editing Cultural Relations Review monthly e-journal
Writing of interviews with diplomats, experts and decision-makers
Event support and development (working to support international conference, research, public relations, event management)
Taking part in international trainings organised by the ICRP or its partners

Knowledge, skills and competences to be acquired by the end of the traineeship

At the end of practicum period the intern will be able to conclude and publish articles on current issues of international relations and to cover in-depth analyses concerning cultural relations policy. The practicum contributes to the development of professional education of the intern through the tasks given during the learning period. The students will have opportunity to meet diplomats and scholars from across Europe and the globe. The ICRP practicum programme helps strengthening professional skills.

What do participants cover?

Travel expenses: participants cover their travel expenses from/to their home countries. (Local travel and travel within Europe for trainings is covered by the ICRP).
Visa and insurance: participants who are required to have a visa to enter to Hungary have to cover their visa costs. It is required to have accident insurance for the whole duration of their stay.

Applying for practicum

Students considering to apply to the ICRP for practicum can submit their applications either individually or apply under a trilateral agreement between their universities (sending organisation), the ICRP (host organisation) and the student.

For students enrolled in partner universities

The programme is available to applicants aged 18+ who are regularly enrolled in partner universities in any non-EU member countries, at the undergraduate or graduate level, who meet the specific requirements of the practicum. Applicants should contact the international office of their university for further information about the available programmes and placements. The work placement can last for 4 or 14 weeks and may co-financed by the sending university. The practicum is an integral part of the curricula and students receive formal recognition of completing the practicum from the ICRP and their sending institutions. Applications accepted continuously!

For individual applicants

The programme is also available for individual applicants aged 18+ who are living in any non-EU member countries, at the undergraduate or graduate level, who meet the specific requirements of the practicum. Applicants should contact by email the ICRP directly for further information about the available programmes and placements. The work placement is self-financed and lasts for 4 or 14 weeks. Participants receive formal recognition of completing the practicum from the ICRP. Interested applicants may send their resume and cover letter in English. The cover letter should specify the proposed period and dates of the practicum Applicants may send their application in the form of MS Word file attached to an e-mail to the ICRP. Applications accepted continuously!
The practicum fee for individual participants for 4 weeks is 1,350 EUR and for 14 weeks is 3,000 EUR

Interview (making interview with decision makers, diplomats and key actors of politics/international relations)
Event development (organising and participating on a local event as presenter, moderator or organiser)

14 weeks practicum

Publications (journalism genres, academic writing, summaries and reports, opinion pieces). Written materials will be published in the ICRP’s quarterly journal, monthly magazine, special editions and blog.
Interview (making interview with decision makers, diplomats and key actors of politics/international relations)
Event development (organising and participating on local and international events as presenter, moderator or organiser)
Research project (participants run their own research project which they conclude until the end of the practicum period. The focus of their topic can be any international relations, law, economic or cultural issue pre-agreed with the supervisor) or
Event project (participants run their own event project which they conclude with the help of ICRP staff. Events can be seminars, workshops, conferences, round-table discussions or lectures.
